First marmots of 2023!

It might not look like much, but those dots on the snowy slopes of Mount Arrowsmith are Vancouver Island Marmots! Spotted yesterday, these are the first marmots confirmed to have emerged from their long hibernation, and they appear to be Ginger and two of her pups from last year!

Snow is melting quickly in the marmots’ sub-alpine habitat, and we expect to start seeing more marmots in the near future. Photos and observations by marmoteers Tanin and Samara.

Here’s a slightly closer look at the three marmots. Snow conditions prevented the crew from getting a closer look.
