In 2024 your support made it possible for us release 67 marmots to the wild, restore their habitat, translocate marmots to support small colonies, and provide supplementary food to the wild population of the critically endangered Vancouver Island marmot.
And the marmots responded! This summer, there were 108 pups in the wild – more than has ever been recorded for this species! Marmots in nearly every colony seemed to thrive. Several small colonies in Strathcona Park celebrated their first ever litter of pups, while larger colonies, like Marble Meadows, expanded into habitat that has been not occupied by marmots in over 40 years.

Our challenge in 2025 is to keep that momentum going! That means ensuring that the pups have the best chance possible to grow into adults; that moms have the help they need to have another litter in the next year or two; and that young marmots can find mates and start families of their own.

Thank you for making this year possible for the Vancouver Island marmot. This species would be extinct today except for the work your gifts have made possible. Instead, we can look forward to seeing marmots emerge from hibernation in the spring, and continuing their journey towards recovery in the spring.

With gratitude,
